‘Be the Change you want to see in the world’
The students of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44 D have always been at the forefront in creating awareness for the welfare of the community. It was truly evident, when our students participated in “Swatch Chandigarh” rally organised by Yuvsatta- an NGO in collaboration with Department of Environment, Chandigarh Administration, as a befitting tribute to the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, on his 150th birth anniversary. Realizing well the damage that plastic bags cause to the environment, 30 young Josephians enthusiastically took part in the 3 km. rally, which was flagged off from Open Hand Monument and culminated at the Parade Ground, Sector 17, Chandigarh. Brilliantly coloured and eye catching placards of ‘No Single Use Plastic Use, Waste management or Cleanliness’ were displayed by the students, emphasising the need for a collective endeavour to eradicate the plastic bags usage in the city.
The zeal of our students was at its peak, when holding their banners and placards; they reaffirmed their belief on the Mahatma’s message of ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’. It was a matter of honour for the students to receive certificates with a personal message of appreciation by American Gandhi- Mr. Bernie Meyer, the brand Ambassador of annual Global Youth Peace Fest of Yuvsatta.
Principal Mrs. Monica Chawla motivated the students to be a part of such programmes. She emphasised that plastic is a threat to the coming generation and if we create more awareness on the concept of source segregation and provide alternatives to plastic bags, straws and plates (single use plastic), we can do our part in saving the mother earth.
