Mathematics aficionados celebrated the National Mathematics Day with gusto and verve in St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School Sector 44-D on December 22. This day was announced by the former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on February 26, 2012 at the Madras University to honour the renowned mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. It was a day filled with a myriad of activities related to Mathematics subject.
A short video was shown to the students of the middle block with the focus to bring awareness on the life and contributions made by the great mathematician. This made the children curious to uncover many unknown facts about him. They measured the lengths of Classroom Objects and learning by repetitive practice sessions was emphasized upon. The students also partook keenly in activities like Knowing 3D Shapes, Rubik’s Cube, Mathematics and Music; The students exhibited their original and unconventional ideas through their riveting and fascinating projects. They made working models on various concepts like Rotational Symmetry, Common Multiples, Integers, Areas of Cross Roads, etc.
For the primary students numerous fun activities were conducted like Finding Place Value with marbles,Number Placards, Apple Tree, Hopscotch, etc. This inculcated joy in learning for the young learners. Meanwhile, the upper primary learners made 2D and 3D shapes using matchsticks and clay. Fraction wheel and clock activities were thoroughly enjoyed by the children whilst making the concepts much clearer. The learning of angles and conversions was made easy by measurement ladder and door protractor.
The Senior students prepared beautiful ‘Thanksgiving Cards’ to express gratitude towards Mathematics on behalf of all the other subjects that are a part of the school curriculum.
The day emphasized on highlighting the importance of Mathematics and creating students’ interest in studying the subject in school. Scores of students came forth with great zeal and the school as a whole portrayed a festive look on the occasion. The students and the faculty members unanimously highlighted the importance of the subject in every arena of life.
