THE FIRST AID CLUB AT JOSEPH’S MARKS WORLD HEPATITIS DAY
Students at St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec school were given important information on World Hepatitis Day celebrated every year on 28th July. This day is marked as it is the birthday of Nobel prize winning scientist Dr. Baruch Blumberg, who discovered the virus and developed a diagnostic test and vaccine for it. There are mainly five strains of this deadly virus ie. A, B, C, D and E. Together these cause 1.1 million deaths and 3 million infections per year.
The students of the Secondary classes were made aware about this disease by showing them a video that had vital information regarding this disease. Teachers also had a discussion on its various types, reasons and cure of Hepatitis. Students were told about the initial symptoms that could be important for identifying Hepatitis, which included – nausea, abdominal pain, fever and excessive fatigue. The yellowing of eyes is often seen as an indication of Type B of this disease.
The all-important information regarding the way to keep away from Hepatitis was shared. Students were told on how to protect themselves by practicing good hygiene. They were also told about the use of vaccines in preventing Hepatitis.
Sharing such information with children is imperative as it enables them to be aware and tips given can enlighten students and make them cautious against such deadly diseases. It has been an integral part of the teaching process at St. Joseph’s, to confidently open up conversations and to encourage young people to understand the necessity of good health. This ethos of constructive dialogue with students helps in building a strong foundation of good health and well being.
The Principal Ms. Monica Chawla was appreciative of the fact that Ranjit House marked this day and enabled the youngsters to gain knowledge about this disease. It is rightly said,” Health is not valued till sickness come”. So, awareness about good health has and will always remain important for the students of the school, for surely health is the true wealth.
