World Food Day promotes global awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger, and to highlight the need to ensure healthy diets for all. It is celebrated every year on 16 October to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. Most of the themes for the day over the years have revolved around agriculture and investment in the sector to increase production. Investment in agriculture, along with education and health, can help in turning around the situation of hunger. The theme of 2021 for the same is ‘Safe food now for a healthy tomorrow”, stresses that production and consumption of safe food has immediate and long term benefits for the people, the planet and the economy.
Keeping this in mind the students of St. Joseeph’s Senior Secondary School, Sector 44- D, Chandigarh celebrated the World Food Day with great zeal and enthusiasm. The students of Primary 2 block with great avidity participated in a puppet show on the topic’ Healthy food v/s junk food’ with a message of promoting worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure healthy diets for all. Thus, we take a pledge to adopt a sustainable healthy eating lifestyle curtailing food wastage and consuming a nutrient rich diet as well as extending help to those in need to make a change and reach the Zero Hunger target.
Students of middle block were engaged in virtual hassle free cooking competition enjoying the World Food Day. Besides this the students explained the importance of nutritive and balanced diet. The participants made some mouth watering and healthy dishes like Russian Salad, Lettuce Corn Salad, Avocado Quinoa Salad, Tropical Salad, Protein Powerhouse salad to name a few. A video was also shown to the students depicting the different varieties of cuisines eaten all over the world. Besides this the students were also made aware of different international cuisines and basic table manners. Josephites understood the benefits of consuming fresh food to remain healthy and fit.
It was a delight to see how the young students pledged to end hunger in their own possible way, proving that if we all join hands we can make the world a “Zero Hunger Zone.” The take aways were: feed the poor, start sharing food, share what you get, avoid food wastage, save food for the poor.
“Your diet is a bank account. Good food choices are good investments.”
