‘Maths is not about numbers, equations ,computations or algorithms: it is about understanding. The importance of Mathematics has never been greater than now as Mathematical skills are crucial for a wide array of analytical, technological, scientific, economic and soft skill applications. ‘With an aim to lay a strong Foundation of Mathematics among the students and to develop their creative and critical thinking , St Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School ,Sector 44 D Chandigarh, every year organises Mathematics Week”. This year was no exception. To commemorate the birth anniversary of one of the greatest Mathematicians ‘Ramanujan’ “MathematicsWeek ” was celebrated in the month of December, reaffirming the fact that every child is a natural Mathematician.Each day was earmarked by activities for students . Maths!, Maths !Maths!, For a week this was one element prevalent at St. Joseph’s.
The week started with a special talk on the inception and importance of Mathematics as a discipline, with an aim to create an interactive and interesting learning of Mathematics. Fun filled activities like Multiplication with Repeated Addition, Ordinal Numbers were organised for our tiny tots to enhance recognition and recalling of Mathematical Concepts. Students from Primary-2 reveled in making different patterns using different shapes ‘CreatingTangram’, Decimalmultiplication and Division Slider Metric ladder and Metric caterpillar. It was a fun filled learning experience to cherish as children indulged themselves in all of these amusing Maths activities.
Students of Middle Block engrossed in interesting activities like Rubik Solving,creating a “pizza” ” . and a Decimal Place Value Slider and Wheel.. Besides this students prepared Mathematical concepts based games, models, posters and puzzles which helped in strengthening their concepts. Theytried their hands on Spin Wheel to identify different 3D shapes with their properties. The students were shown a short video on the life of Ramanujan and an online quiz was given to students to test their knowledge about history of Mathematics Day. The students were also taught Vedic Maths Tricks, Japanese Multiplication, 4×4 and 5× 5 magic squares. The students enjoyed playing Tarsia Puzzle as well.
Students from Senior Blockused Mathematical figures and patterns and also the geometrical tools to give a new look to Mandala art. They used the designs to make book marks, covers of their notebooks, Potraits of renowned Mathematicians. The event was successful in intriguing the students about the exciting world of Mathematics.
The revered Principal ma’am Monica Chawla asserted that the purpose behind celebration of ‘Mathematics Week ‘was to provide students and teachers with an opportunity to interface with Mathematics in the real world. She further explained that event of this kind will enable the students in identifying areas in the everyday life ,where they are using Mathematics.
