Girls Rights emphasize that equality between women and men is a matter of human rights and a condition for social justice and is also a necessary and fundamental prerequisite for equality, development and peace.

St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School has always the front runner when it comes to ensuring a positive change in our society. Through various endeavours the Josephians have time and again strived to bring about an upliftment in the mindset of the people. One such initiative taken is the Girls India Project that has been thriving since it’s inception.

Being mindful of the fact  that women and girls in slums remain largely unaware of their own rights and privileges, under the aegis of the Girl India Project, a team of teachers and students of St Joseph’s Sr Sec School Sector 44 D Chandigarh visited the slum area at Sector 25 so as to  make them aware of their own rights They educated them about their rights i.e. right to education, right against child marriage, right against sexual harassment and right to get free legal aid. Girls had a feeling of security as they learnt about the Women Helpline number, Child Helpline number and National Helpline numbers where they can contact at the time of emergency or to get any information. Josephians felt blessed and motivated while interacting with the slum children.

Women and children felt so exhilarated on being educated about their own privileges, of which they were not even aware of and assured to spread this awareness among other people in their neighbourhood. They shouted slogans like ‘My Rights-My Identity, Fight for your Right, Educate Girls Educate the  Nation etc.

The school Director, Mr. Paramdeep Grewal, and Principal, Ms. Monica Chawla emphasized that we are all entitled to human rights. Women of all ages are currently facing some sort of crime against their rights and are suffering in the worst ways. The more we keep letting things like these happen, the more they will continue to grow. We need to make sure that the safety of the women in our country is something that we talk about all the time. Awareness and self preparedness alone will help women get their rights and use them effectively. And St Joseph’s will continue to conduct such awareness drives in future as well to promote girls rights and their social and economic upliftment.
