A special assembly was organized by the Secondary block at St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44-D, Chandigarh to educate students about World Rivers’ Day. The emphasis was on the value and significance of rivers in our lives and the urgent need to do our bit to save these water bodies. A teacher spoke on various aspects of river to draw the attention of children to this all- important aspect. Students were told about the different types of rivers flowing in the country – i.e. the ice fed and the forest fed rivers and the manner in which huge damage has been done to them – consciously or otherwise. According to a study conducted, water resources are being destroyed at such a rapid rate that in another 15-20 years’ time, we will not be able to quench the thrust of people any more. The immense value of rivers were highlighted upon – rivers as means of transportation, as source of water for domestic, agricultural and industrial purposes, for transportation, supporting many kinds of species of fish and animals etc. were underlined. The way to help the rivers was stressed upon – the simplest and most effective ways undoubtedly being , to increase the tree coverage around the water bodies , the mass tree planting movements would be another affective method, thus enabling them to hold water and replenish the rivers. The initiative and tremendous step taking by Sadhguru to RALLY FOR RIVERS was talked about- infact, a documentary had been previously shown to the students which spoke about this nation -wide campaign. Finally, the need to spread awareness and further implement what is necessary would be a huge step for the future of the nation and for the well being of the generations to come. It is this, that was conveyed to the youngsters, more aptly called – “the future and saviours of our rivers”.
