The workshop on Promoting Child Friendly Schools and Homes was conducted by the Department of Pediatrics at the Post Graduate institute of Medical Education and Research. It was attended by Ms. Ananya from St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School. The seminar focussed on various issues concerning the child’s overall development. The resource person, Dr. Prahbhjot Malhi advocated that the responsibility for school readiness of the child lies not only with the children but also with the families and schools that shape his/her growth. Explaining the role of parents in child’s socio- emotional behaviour, he laid stress on the ‘Father Effect’. He said that early positive father involvement like spending quality time, lending emotional support and defining clear boundaries and expectations can lead to greater academic success and positive social behaviour. He also mentioned that the tools like pre- math number concepts, pattern –making and pre-literacy language concepts can be incorporated by the schools for testing the child’s competence. Another resource person, Dr. Bhavneet Bharti correlated the adverse childhood experiences with poverty and neglect. She confirmed that the children develop best in the context of safe, supporting and nurturing relationships. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder as a common disorder was also discussed in which parents can provide practice with daily reading at home, praising and acknowledging their progress. Talking about the range of home- based and school- based treatments for autism in children, it was told that the parent should give the child tests covering hearing, speech, language and teaching them daily social interaction skills. The school Principal, Ms. Monica Chawla felt greatly privileged after availing the opportunity of sending a representative from the school for such a knowledgeable experience that centres solely around the child.
