To celebrate Teacher’s Day in a unique way, the teachers of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44-D, Chandigarh along with their students visited SOREM (Society for the Rehabilitation of the Mentally Challenged) as a part of the program “Teaching Beyond Walls” which was initiated by the Principal Ms. Monica Chawla last year. The idea behind the visit was to inculcate the values of empathy like sharing and understanding emotional concerns of the fragile souls and minds. The students and the teachers organized various activities like Puppet Show, Doctor’s talk on Hygiene, singing and dancing. The talented Josephian, Aashna Gupta of Class VI D, presented the ‘Puppet Show’ using beautiful hand puppets which was enjoyed by everyone. The school doctor gave a talk on the importance of Hygiene and highlighted the steps for good Hygiene. As music binds our souls, hearts and emotions, melodious songs were sung together with SOREM students to cheer the spirits and pull the heartstrings of everyone present. At the end the peppy music was played, wherein Josephians along with the SOREM students tapped their feet. Spending time with the inmates of SOREM was a wonderful experience and worth cherishing for both the children of SOREM and for the teachers and students of St Joseph’s as it proved that teaching and learning does not happen in the four walls of the classroom but it is much beyond that. The day ended with a message that teaching has no boundaries and hence it is considered as Noble Profession.
