The students of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44-D, have on a monthly basis been given talks by the counsellor of the school on valuable issues pertaining to teenagers. Sometimes meaningful videos are shown to children on the smart-boards to help them relate to the concerned issue and to assist students in whatever way possible. Recently in the Secondary School, students of classes IX and X were shown a video on depression- an ailment that may occur in a few students. The video spoke of the symptoms of depression and the ways to seek help and assistance and how to overcome this problem in the best possible manner. The video ‘The black dog’ highlighted about how depressed teenagers suffering from low self-esteem require lots of love, kindness and patience. The early signs of depression could be restlessness, irritability, fatigue, loss of interest from different activities, poor school performance, poor concentration- to name a few. The ways to help such cases was also highlighted upon- the most important being to be observant and be a good listener.
To be able to identify such cases and render help is imperative. Small steps taken are effective and can go a long way in helping a peer. Some significant suggestions mentioned were- to be there for the concerned person, not to judge or criticize, to avoid making comparisons and most importantly, to be patient as the sufferer is fighting a tough battle.
Such sessions are significant and valuable which assist students in the long run. The school has always catered not only to the academic needs of the students but also to the physical and emotional needs as well. These talks videos and meaningful sessions are encouraged by the Principal Ms. Monica Chawla who realizes the value of this all-important aspect to be dealt with at school level. These discussions/videos have and will continue to benefit as well as facilitate the young teenagers of the school. Parents have always been most appreciative of the school’s efforts to help their wards in all possible ways.
