ST JOSEPH’S MARKS INTERNATIONAL MOTHER LANGUAGE DAY
‘If you talk to a man in a language, he understands that goes to his head.
If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.’
The students of St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Chandigarh marked ‘International Mother Language Day’ on February 21. The purpose behind the celebration of this day is to sensitize students on the need for greater use of their mother tongue and other Indian dialects. In the Secondary Block, an activity was conducted on Mother language day, in which students presented songs poems and spoke on the importance of the mother tongue. They also discussed the importance of religion, culture, heritage, rituals, folk dances, food delicacies etc. Moreover, they had light conversations and taught their peers a few words from their mother tongue. They expressed that all languages are unique in their own particular way. Moreover, they emphasized that one should learn to appreciate plurality. Students cherished unforgettable childhood memories of their respective states where they spoke the language closest to their heart and pledged to speak in their mother tongue, thus preserving it thereafter.
The School Management and the Principal Ms. Monica Chawla appreciated the efforts of the Language Faculty to impart communicative skills and proficiency in the mother tongue. She added that this effort gave a necessary fillip to “Knowledge Creation” and encouraged the adaptation of the latest technologies of languages and assisted learners in picking up another language. She added that this multilingualism is an asset and a unique tradition that must be carried on.
