To improve the understanding of disaster risks, hazards, and vulnerabilities, the students of St. Joseph’s School, Chandigarh, marked International Natural Disasters Reduction Day in the school premises. The United Nations International Day for Disaster Reduction is marked globally to promote a worldwide culture of risk awareness and disaster reduction, as well as to recognise how people and communities throughout the globe are decreasing their vulnerability to catastrophes and increasing awareness about the significance of mitigating the risks that they face. Students of the Secondary Block prepared interesting projects on Disaster Management in which they showcased their talent in the most artistic way. The Social Science faculty educated the students about the causes and effects of natural disasters along with disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness. An elaborate discussion on the major natural disasters of the year was done. These included the earthquake in Assam, the wildfires in Feugo and the destructive cyclones and floods in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. They discussed meticulous planning in case of any emergency due to a natural disaster.
The Director Mr. Paramdeep Grewal and school Principal Ms. Monica Chawla appreciated students for their efforts and added that many tragedies can be prevented if there are disaster risk reduction strategies to manage and reduce existing levels of risk and avoid creating new threats. In the end, the day proved to be a reminder of some common environmental challenges which may result in massive disasters. It thus becomes imperative to have an effective plan that can be put into action by people who are genuinely concerned about important issues that matter to humanity at large.
