“Preparation through education is less costly than learning through tragedy.” Max Mayfield
Keeping this in mind, a visit to the Fire Station was organised for the students of K.G. at St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Sector 44 D, Chandigarh. The fire brigade team demonstrated the procedure of extinguishing fire. They donned fireproof costumes and guards, took the hose pipe attached with the fire engine and sprayed with full force on a tree to show its reach and impact. Firefighters showed children different equipment used during emergencies as well as made them understand about how to contact fire authorities during emergencies. They cautioned them to give way whenever they heard the fire brigade siren on the road.
The students were excited to see and touch various machines and tools used in dousing the fire. They were also intimated about the precautions, helpline number and protective measure to be taken at the time of fire outbreak. Back in school, the teachers showed the students fire extinguishers placed at various places in the premises, for emergency usage. It was a unique learning experience for all the kids as they witnessed and acquired practical knowledge of putting out fires and the working of fire station staff. The visit provided the students, the perspective about how one should act in an emergency.
