Our body runs on energy and nutrients and the only source of these is the food we eat. Therefore, it is necessary to make healthy food choice for overall health and well-being. UN has declared 2023 as ‘The International Year of Millets’ which provides a unique opportunity to raise awareness about these incredible ancestral crops with high nutritional value. To carry forward, Primary-2 Block in St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School, Chandigarh took the initiative to motivate the students to come together to declare their commitment to consume millets based food products. In line with this, the teachers of class 3 organized a millet centric ‘Healthy Tiffin Competition’ for the little stars. They were asked to bring millets based food in their tiffins and speak about its nutritional facts. Parents also acted as an integral part of this activity as they prepared their children with the presentation and dining layout of the food. Children were also eager to share their food with teachers and friends. Under the visionary guidance of the Coordinator Ms. Jyothi Belawadi, the event remained a success to convey the message to learn about sustainable lifestyles in a fun and exciting way. She also suggested many ways to stick around healthy diet as eating a variety of millets based foods protects us against many chronic and non-communicable diseases. Millets constitute an essential source of food and fodder for millions of poor farmers and play a vital role in ecological and economic security of India.
