Learn to proficiently apply Competency Based Assessment

St. Joseph’s mentors learn to proficiently apply Competency Based Assessment criteria for raising the bar of their students’ academic performance.
St. Joseph’s Sr. Sec. School has always taken a pivotal stand for student centric education. This time also the teachers underwent a rigorous training session for imbibing a progressive transition to integrate Competency Based Learning in the Classrooms. The Lead expert, Ms. Geeta Chhabra under the flagship of Orange Slates and facilitated by Vrushali Shah meticulously helped the teachers to chalk out a road map in customizing the assessment pattern as per the rationalised curriculum.
As per the NEP 2020 the rubrics of teaching learning process, teaching methodology, pedagogy, evaluation and assessment should be such that they empower in the student an ability to demonstrate along with an apt set of skills, knowledge and language.
The main objective of this workshop was to optimize learning and development in all the students through regular assessments. So, Ms. Chhabra through her insights and knowledge tried to strengthen and acquaint the teachers with the essential features of setting a question paper. She quoted that, ‘we don’t assess the child we assess our teaching,’ she provided the teachers with a blueprint of the competencies that were to be checked in their designed and drafted question papers.
As it is said great assessments are made not born, the participating teachers were seen developing effective rubrics for competency based questions in the workshop. Brief introduction to the 360 degree report card was also shared.
While training on the rubrics of the Holistic Progress Card was going on the teachers could deliberate on the criteria of acknowledging, appreciating and encouraging each level of the learning in the students. It was concluded that observatory documentations which are passed on from one class to another can be a changing moment in the life of the child.
All in all, the training session helped the teachers to acquire the art of measuring the performance of the students on the basis of beginner, progressing and proficient learners. Mrs. Monica Chawla, Principal guided the teachers to redefine, relearn & recreate procedures as a paradigm shift. She urged the participating teachers to build modalities for the students where they can navigate independently, own their learning and practice it as a skill. The Director, Mr. Rupinder Singh Grewal, appreciated the initiative taken by the Principal who always ensures that the Josephian Family leaves no stone unturned in gaining insight into such pertinent thematic approaches.
